Dr. Iskander studied structural engineering at the Technical University of Berlin, (West) Germany, for his Diplom-Ingenieur and Doktor-Ingenieur degrees, concluding in 1996. His thesis was on the development of numerical methods for the analysis of soil-structure interaction problems by finite elements. He then worked with several major multi-disciplinary design firms, mainly on heavy civil and infrastructure projects and in particular underground structures. His projects include treatment plants, concrete buildings, tunnels, shafts, dams, soil retaining structures and concrete bridges. Due to his training, Dr. Iskander has an extensive hands-on knowledge of the finite element techniques, inelastic material behavior, multi-phase materials and structural dynamics
